Poster Brief:

Design an eye catching, cartoon inspired event poster for Flycity JHB, happening on 28 June 2025. The aim was to attract attention, spark excitement, and represent the cultural richness of Johannesburg while capturing the energy of the artists and street aesthetic.

Key Steps in the Design Process:

  • Conceptualization: The theme was built around “flight” and “freedom,” using elements like cash flying in the sky, birds, and an animated airplane to create movement and draw the eye.

  • Illustration: Using Adobe Illustrator, all elements were hand drawn in a cartoon style, including the bold typography, detailed landscape, and stylized character featuring streetwear elements and Flycity branding (HBTV tag, glasses, jewelry).

  • Image Editing: Photoshop was used to refine artist images for individual posters and create a clean format for all ten artist focused variations.

  • Colour Strategy: Primary colour red, yellow, and blue were selected for their high contrast and visual impact, contributing to the high energy vibe of the event.

Final Design & Colour Palette:

The final layout used strong outlines and high saturation colours to give a poster like animation feel. The background combines Johannesburg's silhouette with playful, surreal landscapes, blending real and imaginary worlds. This duality mirrors the event’s blend of music and visual fantasy.

  • Primary Colours: #e60012 (Red), #ffd700 (Yellow), #0066cc (Blue)

  • Accents: Green cash notes, natural tones for trees and sky, and bold black for shadows and outlines.

Conclusion:

The Flycity JHB poster was crafted to reflect the electric energy of Joburg’s creative youth. It balanced bold visuals with storytelling elements, turning the event into a narrative of culture, music, and movement. The project resulted in ten individual artist posters and a cohesive campaign identity, setting a new standard for urban event marketing visuals.
